Screen light or desk lamp? Fit, power and control explained
Choose desk lighting for the work you do and the space you have. A screen light can free up room beside a monitor; a desk lamp offers more freedom to move the light across a notebook or drawing surface. Fit, power and control matter as much as appearance.
Compare the two formats
| Detail | Screen light | Desk lamp |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Usually mounts on the monitor's top edge | Needs room for a base or suitable clamp |
| Position | Generally follows the screen position | Can often be moved toward a separate task |
| Fit | Monitor thickness, curve and rear shape matter | Desk thickness, edge and arm clearance matter |
| Camera setup | Can compete with a webcam for mounting space | Position separately from the camera and screen |
| Power | Check USB input and power-adapter contents | Check mains, USB or battery requirements |
1. Measure the mount
For a screen light, inspect the monitor's upper edge, rear housing and curve. Check the specified clamp arrangement and whether it blocks a webcam. For a desk lamp, measure the base area or clamp position and leave room for the arm to move. Product photos cannot confirm fit with your exact monitor or desk.
2. Check where the light falls
From your normal sitting position, look for reflections on the screen and shadows across the work surface. Brightness adjustment lets you match the light to the room; colour-temperature adjustment changes the appearance of the white light. RGB ambient lighting is a separate decorative function and does not replace the task light.
An example: Yeelight Screen Light Bar Pro
The Yeelight YLTD003 listing combines dimmable white task lighting, rear RGB ambient lighting and a rotary wireless controller. The lamp is approximately 485.5mm long and 23mm in diameter, with a listed 5V DC/2A input and 10W rated power. Compare those dimensions with your screen.
A suitable USB power supply is required. A computer port that supplies too little power may cause unstable operation, and a UK mains adapter is not promised in this supplier configuration. The lamp's low-voltage input must not be connected directly to mains electricity.
3. Choose controls that suit you
Decide whether you want physical controls, a remote or a compatible app. Check regional model, network and software requirements before relying on smart functions. Game-sync and voice-control features can need separate compatible software or services. Keep a practical way to adjust the light during ordinary work.
4. Understand the package
Read the selected option and included-accessory list. A photograph may show a monitor, keyboard, power supply or decorative accessories that are not included. Confirm any batteries or adapter the controller needs. If those details are not specified, ask before ordering.

- Product delivery estimate and checkout shipping charge
Common questions
Will it work on a curved monitor? Some models support compatible curved screens, but the clamp and rear housing must fit. Check the exact light and monitor combination.
Can I use desk lighting for filming? You may need a separate camera light positioned for your face. A light designed for the desktop is not automatically a suitable filming light.
Does a USB connection mean any adapter will work? No. Compare the product's input requirements with the supply's output and use the supplied instructions.
